The Nigerian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone has spoke about the need
for the reintroduction of Civic Education in the country’s educational system.
Her
Excellency Gladys Modupeola Quist-Adebiyi was speaking recently during a
courtesy call at her Hill Station office in Freetown by senior officials from
the National Commission for Democracy (NCD).
H.E. Quist-Adebiyi urged the
NCD to work closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to
develop a curriculum that would see civic education re-introduction.
With regard issues raised by
the NCD, the Nigerian envoy said Sierra Leone and Nigeria have special ties
that cannot be broken and therefore assured their commitment to ensuring that
Sierra Leone’s democracy is deepened. She encouraged the NDC delegation to put
their concerns on paper and forward it to her office, with the assurance that
she would do her best to pass the Commission’s concern to the rightful
authorities in Nigeria for assistance.
“The
commission has the constitutional mandate to educate residents and institutions
about their civic rights and responsibilities with the aim of projecting the
sovereignty of the state. We have been very effective to this call and doing
our best with limited resources in our disposal,” he said.
Dr.
Kargbo said the commission is currently constrained with capacity building and
connectivity, ranging from vehicles with Public Address System to twining
democratic institutions in Nigeria with the NCD.
