Sierra Leone: Secretary General of The Ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) Osman Yansaneh Reveals When The Party Will Hold Convention

The Secretary General of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party, Ambassador Osman F. Yansaneh, has reacted to a letter written by one Vandy Konneh asking for the party secretariat to call for a national convention to choose new officers including the flag-bearer for the next general elections.

Konneh himself is eyeing Yansaneh’s seat, and is saying that the convention should be convened ‘as expected or slated in the party 1995 constitution’, which some interpret as one year before the next elections.

In an exclusive telephone interview with The Torchlight, Ambassador Yansaneh said Mr. Konneh was showing that he was not fully au fait with the resolutions taken by the 2013 National Delegates Conference which clearly stated that the next convention will “be held within 12 months of the 2017/2018 General Elections and that all elected officials stay in post until then.”

US Attorney General Tells Justice Department Not To Defend President Trump's Immigration Order

The US acting attorney general has told the justice department not to defend President Donald Trump's immigration order.

Sally Yates, who was appointed by Mr Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, said she was not "convinced that the executive order is lawful".

"The Department of Justice will not present arguments in defence of the executive order," she said.
Ms Yates is due to be replaced by Mr Trump's nominee, Jeff Sessions.

In a letter to employees published by US media, she noted that the order had been challenged in court in a number of jurisdictions.

"My responsibility is to ensure that the position of the Department of Justice is not only legally defensible, but is informed by our best view of what the law is," she wrote.

"I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution's solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right."

Sierra Leone: SLPP Flag Bearer, Mada Bio Urge Supporters To Register For The 2018 Election

Sierra Leone main opposition party (SLPP) flag bearer aspirant, Julius Maada Bio, last friday has called on his supporters and Sierra Leoneans to come out in their numbers and register “Pa-O-Pa” for 2018 elections.

As voter registration process will commence in February, run by the Civil Registration Authority, as part of the 2018 electoral process.

During his flag bearer campaign trip to Moyamba on Friday, Bio said they have been cheated in the census data and so this should not be repeated. Therefore, people above 18-years must come out and register. He stated that he has great ideas for the development of the country and this he can achieve if the people register and vote for him, “overwhelmingly”.

Bio maintained that the 2018 elections is for the SLPP and one way this can be achieved is when all the members of the Party come together. He urged other flag bearer aspirants to allow peace in the Party and for them to “subject themselves to the Constitution of the Party”.

Sierra Leone: Chinese Hospital in Jui set to become a training ground for COMAHS Students – Minister of Health

According to the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Abubakarr Fofanah, The ChinaSierra Leone Friendship Hospital, located at Jui, will become the official teaching hospital of College of Medicine and Allied Health Sierra Leone (COMAHS).

Dr. Abubakarr Fofanah, “Since the establishment of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Science, Sierra Leone has had no formal teaching hospitals for medical students.”
Teaching hospitals are hospitals with a formal affiliation to a medical school like COMAHS, and they provide specialized medical care to patients, as well as clinical education and training for doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

President Adama Barrow Removes Islamic From Gambia's Name

The new Gambia President Adama Barrow has removed the ‘Islamic’ title from the country’s name.
According to Aljazeera, the president made this known at his first news conference since returning to take office on Thursday, January 26.

The country was renamed Islamic Republic of The Gambia by former President Yahya Jammeh on 11 December 2015.
As at the time of making the change declaration, Jammeh said it was designed to distance the country further from its colonial past.

Muslims in the United States on Sunday took to the Dallas Fort Worth airport to protest Donald Trump’s executive order temporarily barring Muslims from seven countries from entering the United States. 28,000 Security Officers and 900,000 People to Present In Washington For Donald Trump's Inauguration


On Friday, January 20, 2017 Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America.

For the event, the full force of the US domestic security apparatus will be deployed to stand guard with an estimated 900,000 people expected to gather in Washington for the inauguration and related activities.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has said an estimated 28,000 in personnel from the US Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration, FBI, US Park Police, US Capitol Police, Coast Guard and local police from Washington and around the nation would be fanned out across the city to provide multiple layers and dimensions of security.


Ticketholders for the inaugural ceremony can enter through six public security checkpoints and a list of over 40 banned items, including everything from firearms and fireworks to backpacks, balloons, drums, whistles and selfie sticks have been banned from the event.

Gambia’s president-elect Adama Barrow will be sworn in at the country’s embassy in Dakar, Senegal, his spokesman told AFP this morning.
“It is going to take place at the Gambian embassy in Dakar, they have changed the venue, at 4:00 pm (1600 GMT),” spokesman Halifa Sallah said.

Organisers had planned a large ceremony in a stadium in The Gambia but were forced to change plans due to the political crisis caused by incumbent Yahya Jammeh’s refusal to step down.

Donald Trump Set To Attend Investment Roadshow Event for Nigeria


Donald Trump, who will be fully inaugurated as the 45th US President in the coming days  is reportedly billed to attend an investment roadshow for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector that’s scheduled to hold in the US. In a news report by, The Sun, Nigeria’s minister of state for petroleum, Mr Ibe Kachikwu, was credited with this disclosure. 

The minister was said to have explained that the roadshow is being organised as part of efforts to attract investment to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. Kachikwu while unveiling his goals and those of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources for 2017 in Abuja, said: “We are going to be seeking to attract investments and complete all the MoUs we have in China and India. We are looking to do a roadshow to the UK, we are looking to do a roadshow to the US with President Donald Trump coming in.’’ 

The Petroleum Minister said Nigeria would exploit the relationship built by President Muhammadu Buhari in taking a roadshow to the UK and US. while also assuring the nation of the federal government’s readiness to ensure the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and allocate oil blocks in 2017.
“We are going to accelerate Federal Government’s revenues, look into areas where we could have made more money, so as to support the 2017 budget financing.” Kachikwu said.

NUPENG Kick off 3-day warning strike

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has commenced a 3-day warning strike over failure of some multinational oil companies to address the welfare of their workers as well as continuous job losses in the oil and gas sector.

The Federal Government is billed to have a meeting with the leadership of the union today and the outcome of the meeting will determine if the strike will be continued or be called off.

Yahoo set To Change Name, Board If Verizon Deal Gets Done

Yahoo Inc said that it would rename itself Altaba Inc and Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer would step down from the board after the closing of its deal with Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N).

Yahoo has a deal to sell its core internet business, which includes its digital advertising, email and media assets, to Verizon for 4.83 billion dollars.

The terms of that deal could be amended – or the transaction may even be called off – after Yahoo last year disclosed two separate data breaches; one involving some 500 million customer accounts and the second involving over a billion.


Verizon executives have said that while they see a strong strategic fit with Yahoo, they are still investigating the data breaches.

Five other Yahoo directors would also resign after the deal closes, Yahoo said in a regulatory filing.

The remaining directors will govern Altaba, a holding company whose primary assets will be a 15 per cent stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd ( BABA.N) and 35.5 per cent stake in Yahoo Japan.

The new company also named Eric Brandt chairman of the board, effective Jan. 9.

Yahya Jammeh of Gambia Prepares For War, Hires Mercenaries

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has hired mercenaries in preparation for war as he promised not to step down after losing last month's election. The West African group of nations Ecowas has threatened to oust Mr Jammeh by force if he does not step down when his mandate ends on 18 January.

It was unclear if Mr Jammeh was gathering mercenaries in order to cling on to power or to prevent any attempt to prosecute him for abuses carried out during his long reign, Buzzfeed said.

A former Liberian army commander told Buzzfeed that there were thousands of Liberian former soldiers living in refugee camps who would jump at the chance to earn money by fighting for Mr Jammeh.
However, an attempt by Mr Jammeh to court Senegalese separatists in the southern Casamance region - which borders The Gambia - has been rebuffed, Buzzfeed reported, quoting a Gambian government source.


The report quotes an unnamed Ivory Coast intelligence officer as saying there was a big recruitment of former militants from Ivory Coast and mercenaries from Liberia.

The airline has released a statement condemning the attack on one of its managers by angry passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport two days ago (Read here). As the country political weather is about to change, President Ernest Koroma has given the green light signal for the commencement of country’s electoral process, as the politicians are get set to battle for the first position of the country as the political weather is about to change.

Koroma, in his new year message, told Sierra Leoneans (amidst rumors that the he intend defer the elections to 2020) that there’ll soon be the commencement of country’s national electoral contest.

“Fellow Sierra Leoneans, soon, our national electoral processes will begin,” he self-righteously but confidently said. Furthered: “there will be several aspirants seeking political office, and that debates will go on and tensions may rise, but Sierra Leoneans should put the interest of the nation first.”
 “We therefore owe it to ourselves and to our future generations to stay together, to work together and to build this our beloved nation together,” he maintained.

Nigeria News: Lagos State House of Assembly Approve Death Penalty For Kidnappers

Yesterday, The Lagos State House of Assembly approve death penalty for kidnapers as it passed the Anti-kidnapping Bill into law.
Tagged “A bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of the act of kidnapping and for other connected purposes”, it will become law after Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s assent.

The bill prescribes death sentence for kidnappers whose victims died in their custody. Kidnappers whose victims did not die in their custody will get life jail.
It was passed following the adoption of a report presented by Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions, Human Rights and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho.

John Mikel Obi has become the latest ex-Premier League star to move to the Chinese Super League after his transfer to Tianjin TEDA was confirmed on social media.
A picture was shared on Chinese website Webo of former Chelsea midfielder Mikel shaking hands with a Tianjin club official and holding the club's shirt.
Mikel, who had been frozen out of Chelsea's first team this season with N'Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic, Nathaniel Chalobah and Cesc Fabregas ahead in the pecking roder, will reportedly earn £140,000 a week.

Nicki Minaj Confirms Break Up With Meek Mill on Twitter

Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj have broken up. After weeks of speculation surrounding their relationship, Minaj took to Twitter to reveal that she is a single woman.
This morning (January 5) Nicki tweeted, “To confirm, yes I am single. Focusing on my work & looking forward to sharing it with you guys really soon. Have a blessed New Year. Love u.”
The speculation began after the Barbie posted the following caption on her Instagram page: “Thank God u blew it. Thank God I dodged the bullet. I’m so over u. Baby good lookin out. #BestThingUNeverHad thank u for this epic gift @sincerearmani.”
About a week after Nicki’s post, the Philly rapper uploaded a picture of a woman wearing red lingerie with her back arched on Instagram, furthering more rumors that the two had broken up.

Now it clear that the rappers’ relationship is officially over, and Nicki is entering 2017 back on the market and ready to produce more music.

Nigeria News: 10,000 Youths Set To Benefit From Central Bank Anchor Borrowers Scheme In Ogun Stat

About 10,000 youths and other small scale farmers are set to benefit from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Programme, in Ogun state.
The State Coordinator and Special Assistant to the Governor on Agriculture, Mr Tosin Ademuyiwa, disclosed this in Abeokuta, the state capital, at the flag-off of the programme.

He explained that the programme was aimed at creating employment for youths and boosting agricultural production for food security in the State.
It would give financial support to youths and other small scale farmers to boost cassava, rice and maize production.
