The new management of Sierra Rutile/ILUKA set to lay down over 300 workers will be laid off as a result of termination of a major
contract at Sierra Rutile /ILUKA, reports reaching our source.
Which means that some 300 Sierra Leoneans will add to the already massive number of
jobless people in the country, thereby losing their livelihoods.
It was learnt that the
contract with Transcend, who are contracted to provide Sierra Rutile with Heavy
Mineral Concentrate is said to hang in the balance after the new management
decides to abruptly terminate the contract.
As a result of this,
four paramount chiefs in Sierra Rutile’s operational areas have written to the
company to reverse their decision to avoid unrest in the company and the
community at large.
“…therefore we crave on your indulgence to extend the contract until
proper arrangements are done wherein we will be involved since we are dealing
with the community and we do not want any unrest,” the
chief stated in their letter.
The four paramount
chiefs are PC John Jibao Russell- Nyuma II of Lower Bambara Chiefdom, PC Hawa
Gbanabom of Impere, PC AlhajiBadara Sheriff of Jong Chiefdom, PC Tommy
MualeleJombla of Upper Banta Chiefdom and PC Alhaji Robert S. Papapwe of
Bagruwa Chiefdom.
It could be recalled
that employees and contractors were worried about losing their jobs when news
of ILUKA takeover broke late last year, this is because ILUKA is renowned for
closing mines and cut down workers in Australia and USA.
In
another development the new management of Sierra Rutile Limited has been
accused of racism. Efforts to get the management of Sierra Rutile Limited to
comment on the story did not yield any fruits as they decline commenting on it.
