Nigeria: We Are Not Recruiting ' FRSC Warn Job Seekers Against Fraudsters

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, has told Nigerians that the corps is not recruiting currently, warning against fraudsters using the name of the corps to dupe unsuspecting job seekers.
The warning was contained in a statement by the Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, where he was quoted to have said this on Monday, while addressing staff of the National Headquarters at the Corps Marshal’s weekly Parade.

He said, “My attention was drawn to the rumour, and I want to put it directly to you, that FRSC is neither recruiting nor doing any form of replacement as people are insinuating outside.”

He, however, pointed out that recruitment of staff will not be done in the secrete, assuring the public that the FRSC would follow due process and ensure wide publicity whenever it is carrying out the exercise.

The former minister of petroleum resources under the immediate past government, Diezani Alison-Madueke has been reported to be guilty of another offence.

This was made known by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency said during its ongoing war against corruption, it discovered that the former petroleum minister is alleged to own an $18m mansion While explaining further, it was learnt that the mansion is located in Asokoro area of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, and is valued at $18million with furnishings inside estimated to cost at least $2 million, as well as having a bulletproof gym. 

Sierra Leone: Parliament Set To Amend 1999 Constitution So As To Disqualify Maada Bio From 2018 Election

A secret plan by Members of Parliament to amend the qualifications to be a President in sec 41 of 1991 constitution has been exposed.
Pamela Johnson reports from parliament claimed that certain members of parliament from both APC and SLPP have been holding secret meetings to put forward an amendment to sec 41.
A parliamentary source said that one of the proposals which has been discussed to amend sec 41 is to limit the eligibility for the presidency only to holders of elective office which will disqualify all those who are aspiring to contest for the presidency but are presently not holders of elective office.

Sources say the amendment has been secretly planned to target Maada Bio but by proposing to limit the eligibility for the presidency only to holders of elective office many aspirants from both APC and SLPP will also be affected. A staff of parliament revealed that some senior parliamentarians in APC and SLPP are planning to throw their hats into the ring of the flagbearership contests of their respective parties and they want to use the amendment as a legal platform.

Sierra Leone Overtakes Ghana As Most Peaceful Nation In West Africa


Sierra Leone, the second most peaceful country in West Africa in 2015, has overtaken Ghana to become the most peaceful country in the sub-region, as measured by the Global Peace Index of the Institute for Economics and Peace – an international think tank based in Australia.
Both Ghana and Sierra Leone are in the second quintile of the most peaceful countries around the world but Ghana was ranked 46th of 162 countries in 2015, while Sierra Leone was ranked 50th.
From fifth in Africa in 2015, Ghana has been leapfrogged by Sierra Leone and is now the sixth most peaceful country on the continent and the second in West Africa.

Cars In Nigeria Would Have Been Running On Gas If Only They Allowed My Plan – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday said his intention during his regime was to develop the nation’s natural gas for vehicles to use and reduce dependence on imported petrol.
Obasanjo said he gave out licences to companies in a bid to achieve this, adding that by now, 50 per cent of the vehicles in the country should have been running on gas.

The former President stated these during a courtesy visit by the management of Nipco Plc to him at his Presidential Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In 2006, the Obasanjo administration gave out licences to three companies, Nipco Plc, Contact Global and Global Steel, for the development of Compressed Natural Gas for vehicles.
But it was gathered that only Nipco, which later went into a partnership with the Nigeria Gas Company to form Green Gas Limited, had invested significantly in the project since then.

Nigerians Will Start Getting N500bn Social Intervention From June 11 - Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says Federal Government will start the first roll out of its N500 billion intervention scheme on June 11.

The minister made the disclosure at the inaugural “Buharimeter Town hall Meeting’’, organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), in Abuja on yesterday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the town hall meeting was organised to evaluate the one year of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
Mohammed said the government would on Saturday open an internet portal named “npower.gov.ng’’ and start taking applications for the 500,000 direct teacher job scheme.

He said that other schemes in the social investment programme would be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Nigeria: Benue State Declares Fridays Work Free Day For Farming

Due to the current Economic downturn, Benue State has declared every Friday a work free day to enable workers in the state work on their farms so as to be able to produce food for their families to eat. The work free friday begins today, June 10 and will last till end of July, 2016. 

The Benue State Executive Council approved this yesterday.

Governor Samuel Ortom, who chaired the session of the meeting at which the decision was taken, explained that the objective was to enable as many workers as possible to produce food to feed their families in the current economic downturn which has made the regular payment of salaries a major challenge

Gambia Bans Music, Drumming & Dancing Becauce Of Ramadan

The Police has warned that there should be no celebration as Muslims are observing the Holy Month of Ramadan. The Office of the Inspector General of Police in honour of the Holy Month released a statement informing the General Public that all ceremonies, festivities and programs that involves drumming, music and dance during the day or at night are prohibited.

All those engaged in the practice are therefore warned to desist from such acts other wise they will be apprehended and made to face the law without compromise, the statement added.

The Inspector General of Police, went on by advising the General Public to report any such persons or groups to the police as stern action will be taken against those found wanting of violations.

Sierra Leone: President Koroma Releases Le3 Billion To Guma Valley Water Company To Proffer Solution to the Current Water Crisis in The Country

Chairman for the Parliamentary Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Sualiho M. Koroma has on Tuesday 7th June, 2016 confirmed that the government of His Excellency, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, has provided Le 3 Billion to Guma Valley Water Company, through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED), to implement their emergency response plan to cushion the effects of the water crisis on residents in Freetown and its environs.

Hon. Sualiho M. Koroma made this disclosure during a debate at the House of Parliament in which recommendations contained in the report on the Freetown water crisis are presentation by the Guma Valley Water Company to Members of Parliament.
The recommendations of the report state that Parliament is “to synchronize the efforts of the Committee set up by His Excellency the President to investigate and demarcate all encroachment areas, Parliament should support the work of the Committee by presenting the document of their investigation for approval by the whole House before any demolition.”

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Pays N56bn To The Federation Account

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it paid N56.22 billion into the Federation Account in April 2016.
This is contained in the corporation’s Monthly Financial Report released in Abuja on Thursday.

“NNPC transferred N56.22 billion to the Federation Account for the month of April being proceeds from local sale of petroleum products.
“Thus, the sum of N933.12 billion has been paid to the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) from March, 2015 to April, 2016,” the report said.
On crude oil sale for the month under review, it said that NNPC recorded export sale of 289.36 million dollars, adding that the sales were made in March, while the collection was made in April 2016.

It added that in spite of the export sales, NNPC did not make any dollar remittance to the Federation Account in April.

Bill To Reduce Age Qualification of Political Candidates to 30 Years Passes Second Reading In House of Reps

The second reading of a Bill by the House of Representatives seeking to reduce the age qualifications for interested candidates to contest for the positions of President, governor and senator in the country to 30 years, passed second reading yesterday June 8th.

The bill also seeks to reduce the age qualifications to contest for the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to 25 years.

The bill which is being sponsored by Tony Chinedu Nwulu representing Oshodi-Isolo 11 Federal Constituency of Lagos State, seeks to alter section 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the 1999 constitution which had pegged the age qualification of candidates for the office of President at 40 years and above, office of governors and senate, 35 years and above and House of Representatives and state Houses of Assembly members to 25 years and above.

Speaking on the bill, Nwulu said “Countries like the United Kingdom parliament decided in 2006 to lower their age of candidacy from 21 to 18, which had existed since the Parliamentary Elections Act 1695. An age candidacy of 25 would encourage greater youth participation in politics.” The bill is also seeking to permit independent candidacy during any election.

Daily Times of Nigeria clocks 90 years

One of Nigeria’s oldest newspapers, Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN), incorporated in 1925 has clocked 90 years, the owners, Folio Communications Ltd., announced on Sunday.
Folio Communications, a holding company and owners of Daily Times and six other titles, said in a statement in Lagos that the celebration would go beyond the niche, newspaper.
It noted that DTN was the the nation’s flagship in news, media human capital development and professional path driver.

The company said that the 90th anniversary was an exciting milestone in Nigeria’s media history as the activities for the celebration had been scheduled to last between June and July 2016.

26-Year-Old Army Officer Wins Miss USA Pageant

This year's newly crowned Miss USA has both beauty and brain, and serves as an army officer in her country.  The 26-year-old, whose mother, father, brother and sister have also served in the army, claimed the title after giving a strong answer when asked about women in combat, saying that gender doesn't limit women in America. 

Miss District of Columbia Deshauna Barber will go on to compete in the Miss Universe contest as the winner of Sunday's 2016 Miss USA competition held at the T-Mobile Arena off the Las Vegas Strip.

Nigeria: MASSOB, BIM Appeal To United Nations To Divide Nigeria


Two pro-Biafra groups have appealed to the United Nations and other world leaders to divide Nigeria into six geo-political zones to solve the current crisis. Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) stated that giving the six geo-political zones in Nigeria self rule would be the only answer to the many problems in the country.
MASSOB alongside with Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) called on the UN and other super powers to regard the lives of people that are killed on a daily basis in Nigeria arising from the insurgency in the north east and Fulani herdsmen said to be reportedly affiliated to ISIS and Boko Haram.

Ghana Set To Ban Cosmetic Products Responsible For Skin Bleaching

Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is set to ban the sale of cosmetic products which contain the skin bleaching ingredient 'hydroquinone'. The Ban which is to be effective in August this year, will ensure that the products will no longer be imported to the country. This is to deter users of the cancer-causing chemical within the Ghanaian market.

According to FDA spokesperson, James Lartey, all skin lightening products will be banned and products containing hydroquinone will not be allowed into the country. From August 2016, the acceptance for skin lightening products is going to be zero.

There were rumours on media outlets today, that Musa, the 4-year-old mutilated by his Step mother had passed away. Angels of Hope Foundation, an NGO that has been giving reports on Musa's treatment and progress in the hospital, has debunked the reports. According to their CEO,

"It is sad that people start false rumors without confirmation. People have been circulating rumors that the mutilated toddler Musa has passed away. I received various calls this morning from online news channels asking me to confirm or refute the story. Well here is my answer "Musa Is Alive and getting better".

Photos: Bodies of 85 African migrants, including 2 children wash up in the coastal town of Zuwara, Libya

The bodies of at least 85 migrants who drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean were found washed up from the beaches of the coastal town of Zuwara, on Thursday afternoon, June 2, a Red Cross official said.

They are believed to be migrants who perished in a string of shipwrecks that took place inside Libyan waters late last week. Al-Khamis al-Bosaifi said most of the migrants appeared to be from sub-Saharan Africa, though their bodies were decomposed and it was not clear when they drowned. The bodies of two children were among those recovered.

Federal Government of Nigeria Releases Census On All The Goats, Cattles, Pigs, Sheeps, Camels, Other Livestocks In Nigeria

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh on Thursday released a census of livestock in the country.
Mr. Ogbeh spoke at a news conference in Abuja. He said the 2011 National Agricultural Sample Survey indicated that Nigeria was endowed with an estimated 19.5 million cattle, 72.5 million goats, 41.3 million sheep, 7.1 million pigs and 28,000 camels.
Accordingly, the minister said the country had 145 million chickens, 11.6 million ducks, 1.2 million turkeys and 974, 499 donkeys.

S. Korea Beat Nigeria In Olympic Football Prep Tournament

Hosts of the 2016 Suwon Invitational Tournament, South Korea, defeated Nigeria U-23s 1-0 in the opening game which took place today.

Federal Government of Nigeria Cancels Post UTME, Says We Have Confidence In JAMB

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) into the nation’s institutions of higher learning.

Post UTME is usually conducted by universities for candidates after they have passed the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations.

While announcing this in Abuja to declare open the 2016 combined policy meeting on admission to universities, polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, the Minister of Education ,  Malam Adamu Adamu, said the federal government has confidence in the examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, adding that there is no need for other examinations to be conducted by universities after JAMB exams.

“As far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB, let them bring it and then we address it,” he said.

Sacked government ministers in Guinea-Bissau have been sleeping at their offices for the past seven nights, in an unusual protest against President Jose Mario Vaz's decision to appoint a new prime minister.

"Yes, yes, it's been a week today," sacked Communications Minister Agnelo Regala told the BBC's Liliane Nyatcha, when asked to confirm that they were sleeping at their old ministerial offices.

A new prime minister and new cabinet members were sworn in last week, in a move the ousted ministers regard as unlawful.
