Angelina Jolie Set To Feature Christiano Ronaldo In A Movie

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lined up to feature in a TV drama alongside Angelina Jolie.

The Madrid forward is expected to appear in a TV drama series about Syrian refugees, “Hayat Koprusu” trying to escape war. Director of the series, Eyup Dirlik said.

The series which is about the plight of a Syrian refugee family who flees the war-torn country, and what they go through will be released in April this year. The series will feature actors and actresses from all over the world.

Robert Mugabe To Celebrate 93rd Birthday With $2 million

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe turns 93 yesterday and on Saturday a lavish party to celebrate his birthday is expected to cost more than $2 million (1.88 million euros). 

This year's celebration of President Robert Mugabe's 93rd birthday takes place in Matobos southwest of Harare on Saturday. Some Zimbabweans are calling Mugabe to use the money to address the myriad of problems besetting the country while others are planning to celebrate their leader's birthday.

Lagos State Government Asks Schools To Conduct Thursdays Assembly In Yoruba

Lagos State Government yesterday directed schools in Education District 1 to conduct their Thursday Assembly sessions in Yoruba language, a mother language for the state, In order to prevent Nigerian culture from been eroded just as it launched a teacher’s guide for the exercise.

Meantime, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, and Lagos State Government also asked teachers and parents to desist from discouraging students who speak their local languages within school premises.
UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, and Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Dr. Oluyinka Ayandele, made the appeal at this year’s International Mother Language Day, IMLD, themed “Towards Sustainable Future through Multilingual Education,” held at Government Senior College, Agege Local Government.

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev Appoints Wife As Vice-President

Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev has named his wife as his deputy, tightening the family’s grip on power in the small former Soviet oil-producing state.

Mehriban Aliyeva will become Azerbaijan’s first vice-president, Mr Aliyev said in a decree issued on Tuesday that did not detail her responsibilities but effectively installed the first lady as the country’s second most powerful person and consolidated her position as a frontrunner to succeed her husband. Energy-rich Azerbaijan has been controlled by the Aliyev family for most of the past five decades.

Mr Aliyev’s father Heydar was head of the country’s governing Communist party before becoming president of the post-Soviet republic in 1993. His son took over as leader in 2003. Mrs Aliyeva, who on Tuesday attended a meeting of the country’s security council, hailed the support of her husband in accepting the position. “Mr President, I express my deep gratitude to you for this high confidence in me,” she said, in remarks reported by local media. “Your assistance and your support stand behind each success and each achievement [of mine] you have mentioned.” The 52-year-old Mrs Aliyeva, who hails from one of Azerbaijan’s most powerful families, is well known in the majority Muslim country for her western dress sense.

Sierra Leone Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA), Hon. Sidie Yayah Tunis has informed the Media and Entertainment Stakeholders about the staging of the first, National Entertainment Awards, (NEA) 2017 which will take place in 29 April 2017 at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown

During a joint press briefing, the Minister explained that the event aimed at promoting the image and rich culture of Sierra Leone through entertainment.

Sierra Leone News: SLPP Set To Conduct Flagbearership Election in April

The National Executive Council (NEC) of opposition party, Sierra Leone People`s Party (SLPP) in its meeting at the party’s headquarters in Freetown yesterday also agreed on the Rules and Regulations to conduct the flagbearer as well as those of the National Officers of the party be conducted in April in Kenema.

Also, the August body ratified the Peace agreement brokered by Green Peace Movement which in its February 8, 2017 peace conference at the party headquarters in Freetown agreed among other things the lifting of all suspensions and expulsions since 2013, the withdrawal of all court cases and the re-examination of the disputed 39 constituencies.

SLPP source revealed to us that the meeting also agreed on a timetable for the conduct of crucial party elections leading to the National Delegates Conference which as reported will take place in April in the Eastern City of Kenema.

Nigerian Senate Surprises As Debt Increase By 6:53% Under Buhari Administration

Yesterday, 16th February,the Debt Management Office (DMO) said the country’s total public debt stock comprising external and domestic borrowing of the Federal Government, 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is now $57.39billion equivalent to N17.36 trillion.

The Director-General of the DMO, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo released the figure on Thursday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, chaired by Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) for budget defence.
He said the figure was for December 31st 2016.

64 Year Old Spanish Woman Gives Birth To Healthy Twins In Burgos

A 64-year-old woman has successfully given birth to healthy twins - a boy and a girl - in Burgos, northern Spain.

The Recoletas Hospital delivered the twins by Caesarean section, the usual method in such rare cases.
The unnamed woman had undergone fertility treatment in the US, Spanish media report. The hospital has posted a video clip of the Caesarean delivery.

No decision has been taken yet about the mother's twins. They and the mother are reported to be in good health in hospital. The boy weighs 2.4kg (5.3 pounds) and the girl 2.2kg (4.8 pounds).
The delivery went without complications.
In recent years, El Pais reports, two other Spanish women in their 60s have given birth to healthy babies.



Two US Official Set Out Approach To Russia


Two Senior US officials Gen Mattis and Rex Tillerson have been setting out their position on Russia, in some of the new administration's first diplomatic moves.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US would consider working with Russia in some areas but would stand up for its own interests.
Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary James Mattis said Washington was not ready to collaborate militarily with Moscow.

US President Donald Trump has called for improved ties with Moscow.
But the new administration's diplomatic initiative comes as questions are raised about the Trump team's dealings with Russia dating back to last year's election campaign.
US intelligence services have concluded that Moscow hacked into emails of President Donald Trump's Democratic opponents during the election.

Nigeria News: Start Form March Lagos Bus Conductors/Apprentices To Wear Uniforms With Name Tags


The National President of Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN), Mr. Israel Adeshola has reveals that come March 2017, it will be mandatory for bus conductors operating in Lagos state to wear uniforms, name tags, and badges.

The Lagos state government has already approved this new decree last Monday. It was revealed that the reason for the introduction of uniforms for bus conductors is to ensure the safety of bus conductors and also of members of the public.

 
With the badges, any bus conductor involved in a crime will be easily identified. Also, this new development will help to ensure decorum and also solve the problem of passengers falling into the hands of those popularly known as 'one chance' as only registered members will be given the uniforms.

Fellow Sierra Leoneans, on 10th November 2011, I caused my office to announce the dates for the 2012 Local Council and Parliamentary elections; it was little over a year to those elections. 

Today, as envisioned by our Constitution, and in line with established practice, I have again instructed my office to put forth a public notice announcing that parliamentary and local council elections will be held a little over one year from now, on March 7th, 2018. Having consulted with me, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) will also announce that the presidential elections shall take place on the same date. With my Government’s support, NEC and the National Registration Commission have further indicated their readiness to commence registration for electoral and related activities.

Nigeria Senate Questions N620,000 Total Revenue Generated From Culture, Entertainment In 2016

Over poor revenues generated from the culture and entertainment industry Senate questioned Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed on Tuesday, February 14.

At a budget defence session with the minister and other officials of the ministry, the Senate committee on Culture and Tourism declared that it was unfortunate that the ministry presented only N620,000 as total revenue generated in 2016.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, noted that the budget should not only be about expenditure but also about revenue profile.
He said the Senate was displeased with the paltry revenue.

France Warns Russia Not To Interfere In Election

Yesterday France said it would not accept interference by Russia or any other state in its presidential election, and would retaliate if necessary.

The pledge by Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault followed complaints by the party of election frontrunner Emmanuel Macron that his campaign was the target of 'fake news' put out by Russian media, as well as internet attacks on its databases.

"We will not accept any interference whatsoever in our electoral process, no more from Russia by the way than from any other state. This is a question of our democracy, our sovereignty, our national independence," Ayrault told parliament.

He said France would set clear limits, "including retaliatory measures when that is necessary, because no foreign state can influence the choice of the French, no foreign state can choose the future president of the Republic."

Production Of Crude Oil Rises To 2 Million Barrels Per Day In Nigeria

Nigeria Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has stated that crude oil production had risen to two million barrels per day. With the rise, Nigeria now produces additional 200,000 barrels per day, up from the 1.8 million bpd recorded in recent times.

Kachikwu added that In some weeks, Nigeria will be able to progress to 2.2 million bpd, which is the target of the (2017) budget.

Google CEO Responses To 7-Year-Old Girl That Asked Google For Job

7 year old Chloe Bridgewater, is pretty smart. She sent Google a handwritten letter noting her computer skills and expressing interest in working at a place that provides bean-bag chairs and go-karts for their employees.

The 'Google boss', CEO Sundar Pichai, replied telling Chloe that he looks 'forward to receiving' her job application and encouraged the young girl to follow her dreams.

Chloe lives in Hereford, England. She was inspired to write the letter after seeing images of Google offices filled with comfy bean-bags, go-karts and slides.

Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Yakubu Aiyegbeni on list of top 100 Best Foreign English Premier League Players

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha is 33rd on the list of top 100 best foreign players to feature in the English Premiere League, according to acclaimed football magazine, FourFourTwo.

"Okocha almost single-handedly rescued Bolton from relegation trouble in his first season,
netting crucial long-range goals and dazzling the Premier League with strings of outrageous skills and showboats that embarrassed a host of opponents" the magazine said.

US Visa Applicants May Be Asked to Submit Social Media Passwords – John Kelly

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said visa applicants could be asked for passwords to their social media accounts by US embassies.

He made this known to a hearing of the Homeland Security Committee.

SKY NEWS reports that Kelly said it was one of the steps being considered, especially for visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries with very weak background screening of their own such as Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. 

He said anyone who refused to cooperate would not be allowed into the United States.

Lagos State Police plans To Stop Tuface’s Planned Protest on February 6

Yesterday, the Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said he will not allow the planned protest against the Federal Government slated for February 5 to hold in the state.

Popular musician, TuFace Idibia who joined the call for protest by some concerned Nigerians over the state of the nation, had used his social media platforms to appeal to his supporters to join the movement.

But Owoseni, who had earlier stated that there was no official request from the protesters notifying security agencies of their plan, said on Wednesday that intelligence report indicates that criminals might hijack the process.

Nigeria News: Foreign Reserve Now $27.4bn (18.2%)

Nigeria’s foreign reserve has recorded 18.2 per cent accretion since its recent uptrend, standing at $27.4 billion with the latest figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for January 2017.

The uptrend which began October 20, 2016 had persisted with minor pullbacks recorded on November 1, 2016 and December 14, 2016, reversing the over one-year persistent decline which bottomed out at $23.2bn on October 19, 2016.

In the 12 weeks upward trend, the reserve added $4.2 billion as against $8.6 billion it had lost since President Muhammadu Buhari came into power in 2015.

The latest figure of the reserve is also on 10 months high over the last one year while indications are that accretion would continue on the back of improved oil revenue.

Over Sacked US Attorney General, Celebrities Tweet Their Support for Not Defending Trump’s Travel Ban

President Trump fired acting Attorney General Sally Yates for refusing to defend his controversial executive order on immigration and refugees.


The White House released a statement, writing that Yates “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States,” after Yates instructed Justice Department lawyers NOT to make legal arguments defending Trump’s ban.

“My responsibility is to ensure that the position of the Department of Justice is not only legally defensible, but is informed by our best view of what the law is after consideration of all the facts,” Yates wrote in a letter to Justice Department lawyers.
