James Otis Arrested For Destroying Donald Trump's Hollywood Walk Of Fame Star

The millionaire activist who admitted smashing up Donald Trump's Hollywood Walk of Fame star called the Republican nominee a 'serial liar and a misogynist' as he explained his actions on Thursday.

James Otis, 52, an heir to the Otis Elevator Company fortune, was arrested on Thursday for taking a sledgehammer and pick-ax to the $30,000 tourist attraction.

He told reporters a short time after he was released from jail on $20,000 bail, that he did it to show support for women who have accused Trump of groping them.

'He's a serial liar and misogynist and that's why we're here: to try to address that and help those women who told Mr. Trump they won't stand for it anymore,' Otis said.

Nigeria News: Kwara State Will Start jailing People for Tax Evasion

Residents of Kwara State from November as anyone found guilty of defaulting in tax payments would be jailed.

Executive Chairman of Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, KWIRS, Dr. Muritala Awodu, who disclosed this
yesterday at a breakfast meeting in Ilorin, said the decision became necessary to encourage those paying tax to continue to do so, while those not paying would be made to pay.

He added that the decision was to enable the state government meet its target of N3 billion per month and even beyond and to help the state meet its financial obligations to the stakeholders without depending on federal monthly allocations.

He said: ”Kwara State Internal Revenue Service has inaugurated a team to comb the 16 local government areas of the state for enforcement of tax payment, with warnings that defaulters risk various categories of penalties, including imprisonment.”

Members of Parliament approved five Presidential nominees to head different sectors in the country.

They are Ambassador Andrew G. Bangali (National Chairman Civil Registration Authority), Rtd. AIG Sorie Brima Kargbo (Chairman National Drugs Enforcement Agency), Mr. Steven Aiah Mattia (Electoral Commissioner Eastern Region), Mr. Babatunde Pratt (Member Political Parties Registration Commission) and Alphonso Willie M Ngana (member Millennium Challenge Corporation).

Sierra Leone Brewery Pre-launches New Guinness Stout Bottle

Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, prelaunched its new design Guinness Stout bottle produced by the brewery.

Desmond George, the SLBL marketing manager said the internal launch of the new Guinness Stout product was for the SLBL staff and management. He narrated the history of how Guinness Stout was patented in 1759 by an Irish man, Arthur Guinness from Dublin. He continued that in October 1967, the first bottle of Guinness Stout was bottled in Sierra Leone.

He disclosed that the formal launching of the product will be done on Friday 28th October, 2016 at the Bintumani hotel.However, he maintained that come, 2017, there will be a big change in the company’s operations.

Sierra Leone News: IFC Set To supports Western Area Power project with $27M

The International Finance Cooperation (IFC) a member of the World Bank Group has announced a support of $27m debt financing package for the Western Area Power Generation Project in Sierra Leone as the first independent Power project.

A press release from the Cooperation said this is the first of its kind in the country and “the successful implementation of the project will rely on sustained commitment to broader reforms aimed at revitalizing the power sector. These reforms are being supported across the World Bank Group.”

IFC also acted as the lead arranger and interest rate swap provider to mobilize a further $109 million in long-term financing from other development finance institutions, including the African Development Bank, CDC Group (the United Kingdom’s Development Finance Institution), Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, and FMO (the Dutch development bank).

The release further disclosed that “the debt financing package will support an independent power generation facility in an industrial zone about four kilometers outside of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. The project covers the development, construction, and operation of a 57 megawatt heavy oil fuel-fired power plant.”

As Sierra Leone joined the rest of the world on 24th October to commemorate World Polio Day, Government and its partners will conduct the 4th round of polio campaign for this year.

In a media briefing, organised by the Program Unit for child health immunization in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, it was reported that over 5,000 persons are living with disability in the country, despite the continuous public education and immunization campaigns.

According to the UNICEF representative on immunization, since Government and its partners stepped up polio campaign as well as routine vaccination in the country, there has been no reported case of the virus since 2010, which is a sign that Sierra Leone has made progress over the years to reduce the virus.

Clinton Leading Trump Among Young Voters, Harvard Poll Finds

Democratic White House candidate Hillary Clinton is leading among likely voters aged 18 to 29, according to a Harvard University opinion poll released today.

The former U.S. secretary of state had the support of 49 percent of likely voters, ahead of Republican rival Donald Trump's 28 percent support, a substantially wider lead than Democratic President Barack Obama had over Republican former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at the same point in 2012.

National polls of voters of all ages also show Clinton leading, though by a substantially narrower margin.

Sierra Leone News: 33 New Citizens Take Oath of Allegiance at State House

At a special swearing-in-ceremony organized at State House yesterday (Tuesday October 25), 33 new citizens subscribed to the oath of allegiance administered by the Chief Immigration Officer, Alpha Kholifa Koroma.
Emotions ran high as Sierra Leonean citizenship became a reality for these 33 new citizens as they are now official citizens of Sierra Leone and for some of them, it's being a long time coming considering how long they have been in the country.
Even though these 33 have new rights today they also have new responsibilities to protect and defend their new country.

Nigeria News: Minister of Finance Reveals That FG Can No Longer Employ Nigerians

The government of President Muhammadu Buhari may have put a stop to employment into the civil service, Kemi Adeosun, the country’s finance minister, has reportedly said. The administration had promised massive reduction in the rate of unemployment in the country while the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaigned during the 2015 general election.

Adeosun reportedly told the Senate on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, that the government no longer had no reason to take more people into the public sector. Nigeria is currently suffering from a huge economic crunch and an inability to make the 2016 budget perform optimally.

The APC also recently took responsibility for the country’s current woes but promised that 2017 would witness a positive lift. She said what the government planned to do now is strengthen the private sector for more jobs to be created. The Herald reports that apart from this, the minister maintained that the government would sustain its over N6 trillion national budget in 2017.

Nurse Who Survived Ebola, Contacted From A Liberian In 2014 Settles Lawsuit With Hospital

A nurse who contracted Ebola two years ago while caring for the first person to be diagnosed in the U.S, Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Duncan, who contracted Ebola in his native Liberia with the deadly disease became ill during a trip to the U.S., died. Pham, at the time an intensive care unit nurse, and another Dallas nurse who contracted Ebola survived, she settled a lawsuit Monday against the parent company of the Dallas hospital where she worked.
Attorneys for Nina Pham announced the settlement with Texas Health Resources. They and the company said in a joint statement that terms will not be disclosed.
The statement said Pham and the company "wish the best for each other going forward."
In her lawsuit against the hospital's parent company, Pham said that the "sum total" of information she was given to protect herself after being told she would be treating a patient suspected of having Ebola was "what her manager 'Googled' and printed out from the Internet." She said that the day after she got that information, the patient tested positive for the disease.

Sierra Leone News: Public Service Commission Presents Annual Report & Strategic Plan to President Koroma

Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC) Dr. Max Ahmadu Sesay and staff yesterday (Monday October 24, 2016) presented the Commission’s Annual Report for 2015 and its five-year Strategic Plan – 2016-2020 to President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma at State House in Freetown.
According to Dr. Sesay, the two documents are significant because the 2015 Annual Report marks the third and final year of the first ever Strategic Plan developed in the history of PSC, spanning from 2012 to 2015. 
Receiving the documents, President Koroma thanked the Commission for submitting its 2015 Annual Report as well as the Strategic Plan which he described as timely. He commended the Commission for its transformative strides over the years, assuring that the austerity measures would not impede the activities of the Commission. “Activities of the Commission will not be strangled because of austerity measures,” he emphasized.

Judges In Nigeria To Declare Assets Before And After Delivering Judgment In Election Matters, Others

As part of efforts to address the alleged corrupt practices of some judges in the judiciary, the National Judicial Council, NJC, yesterday issued a directive to all judges presiding in “sensitive and highly visible trials such as election petition proceedings” to declare their assets before they begin proceedings on such cases and immediately after they give judgement on such cases.

This directive will be reflected in the new code of conduct for judicial officers which is currently being reviewed by a 10-man Judicial Ethics Committee set up by NJC.

The Minister of information and communication, Mr Mohamed Bangura has on Friday 21st October, 2016 told the people of Sierra Leone that the government is removing the subsidy in fuel as a austerity measure to save the country’s economic crisis.

Dangote Denies Sacking Workers Due To Recession

The Dangote Group of Companies has denied reports that the disengagement of 48 workers from the company was due to economic recession in the country.

Mr Tony Chiejina, its Head of Corporate Affairs, disclosed in Lagos on Monday that the 36 expatriates workers formed the bulk of those disengaged.

He said that the expatriates were disengaged because of job overlap, while the 12 Nigerians that were affected were in the procurement department whose services were now redundant due to growth in the company.

Chiejina said that Dangote group was rather expanding its operations in spite of the recession and this expansion would fire more employments in the company..

Nigeria News: N145 Per Litre Of Petrol Not Possible Now - NNPC

As Nigerians grapple with recession, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Monday reminded the nation that the sale of petrol at N145 per litre was no longer feasible with the current price of foreign exchange.

The Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing, NNPC, Mr. Mele Kyari, stated this at this year’s Oil Trading and Logistics Expo, OTL, holding in Lagos.

He said: “We have a very difficult business environment. It is impossible today to import products at the current market price, at current fixed foreign exchange, FOREX rate.  There is no way today you can take products to retailers and sell at N145. It is not possible. If that is true and I believe that it is, because we all go to the market. Why can’t we sell above N145? That is where legislation should come in.”

Diamond Production In Sierra Leone Increase by 19.1% In First Half Of 2016

Diamond production in the first six months of 2016 was 359,080 carats valued at $101.9 million compared to 290,380 carats valued at $60 million produced in the first six months of 2015.
Total Diamond exports were the highest in terms of value compared to the much talked about iron ore to determine the county’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
The major player in the diamond industry in Sierra Leone is Koidu Limited the subsidiary of Octea Mining Company. Some of the diamond exports also come from artisanal or small scale miners.
However of the $101.9million produced the government of Sierra Leone only gets 3% which is the tax paid on the sale of the diamonds.
Most of the large diamond deposits so far discovered are in the east and South of the country.

Sierra Leone News: Since 2006, Sierra Rutile Third-Quarter of 2016 Production is the Highest

Sierra Rutile’s third quarter (July, August and September 2016) production figures of 43,081 tonnes of Rutile have been recorded as the highest since the company started or resumed operation in 2006, the company stated in a release. The third quarter (Q3) production figures show a 24 percent increase compared to the second quarter (April, May, June) and a 27 percent increase compared to the corresponding period in 2015. This brings total Rutile production in 2016 so far to 104,489.

The company said that the Gangama dry mining plant continue to perform 17 percent above its planned production “as a result of throughput and utilization.”
Ilmenite production also increased in the third quarter (Q3) to 7,143 tonnes compared to 5,025 tonnes in Q2 but dropped compared to the 10,229 tonnes produced during the same period in 2015.

Sierra Leones News: Over 2,000 People Tested HIV Positive In Pujehun Sierra Leone

Over 2,000 (two thousand) people in Pujehun District, southern Sierra Leone have tested positive for HIV, an official has disclosed.

Politico reports that Emma Sengeh, the HIV and AIDS Supervisor in Pujehun, says the district headquarter town alone and its immediate environs account for over 500 cases.
She said Pujehun District used to record the highest HIV and AIDS cases in the country with pregnant women accounting for 4.1 % of the current cases. But she would not tell how things compared now.
Emma spoke about a recent district-wide tour educating the people on the risk of HIV and the prevention/control measures involved.

Dangote Sacks 36 Expatriates, 12 Nigerians Over Recession

The current recession rocking the Nigerian economy has hit one of the biggest employers of labour in the country outside of the government as the Dangote Group, belonging to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has fired 48 members of staff.
Punch gathered that those sacked were made up of 36 expatriate and 12 Nigerian workers from the group’s headquarters and one of the subsidiaries, Dangote Cement Plc.

Five people have died after a plane believed to be carrying EU border officials crashed and exploded into a ball of flames in Malta. The light aircraft crashed shortly after taking-off from the runway at Malta Airport in Luqa at around 5.30am today, reports say.
