The
University of Sierra Leone (USL) held the first award ceremony of “the Chinese
Ambassador’s Scholarship” at the Chinese Embassy, Wilberforce Loop last
Thursday, 17th December.
In his remarks, Amb.
Zhao congratulated the 15 students who won the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship
and expressed his sincere appreciation to USL for their support and cooperation.
He said that USL has a long history and has produced lots of elites and experts for Sierra Leone and other West African countries. “USL has played a positive role in national development and social progress of Sierra Leone. The shortage of human resources is one of the most crucial challenges faced by Sierra Leone, especially during the Ebola epidemic.”
The Ambassador averred that many schools were closed down and some students never went back to school after the re-opening. “Also many girls got pregnant and all of these have a telling effect on the human resource in the country.”

Amb. Zhao said as a true friend of Sierra Leone, the Chinese Embassy decided to help more students continue their education within its capability. He emphasized that the scholarship is a symbol of friendship, hope and responsibility. He encouraged the students to study hard to set good examples for the youth and make due contributions towards the friendship between China and Sierra Leone.
Professor Thompson thanked the Chinese Embassy for providing the scholarships to the students at USL.
He said few day ago, the Chinese Embassy held the
opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute Winter Camp and now the Chinese
Ambassador is on hand again awarding scholarships to the students at USL.
This, he said, demonstrates the great importance the Chinese side attaches not only to the development of education in Sierra Lone but also to the friendship between the Embassy and USL.
Professor Thompson stated that USL would like to keep close communication with the Chinese Embassy to improve the educational exchanges and cooperation between USL and the Embassy.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Zhao conferred the
scholarship certificates to the students who got the opportunity. The students
present expressed their sincere thanks to the Embassy and promised to repay the
society with better academic performance.
“The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship” in USL is established by the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone in 2015. The Embassy will award scholarship to 15 students selected for their outstanding academic performances. Meanwhile, one student will be selected on the merit of academic performance to go to China for further studies to be funded by the Chinese Government Scholarship.
