Sierra Leone News: Labour Ministry diverts welfare payment to farming- Board registrar


The Ministry of Labour and Social Security with the responsibility of advocating for employees welfare and also provides support for the aged through the welfare payment (safety net), has now focused on farming activities with funds meant for the aged.
This was disclosed during the 2016 National Budget at the Sub-Appropriation Committee at the Committee Room 1 headed by Hon Claude Kamanda.



These Sub Committees normally sit to look into the previous budgets of Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ascertain whether they utilised it appropriately before approving the their budget for the coming year.
During the sitting it was disclosed that the sum total of Le 2,000,000,000 (two billion Leones) was allocated to the Ministry of Labour as welfare payment (safety net) to the aged, and according to the Finance, Admin Officer Social Safety Net, Labour Ministry, Ibrahim Sheriff Kanu, they have paid 2,400 (two thousand four hundred) beneficiaries the sum of Le 1,208,100,000 (one billion, two hundred and eight million one hundred thousand Leones) as part of the total budget of Le 2,208,100,000 (two billion, two hundred and eight Million one hundred thousand Leones).
Hon Kamanda was smart to identify the Rokima Agricultural project below the beneficiaries of the Welfare Payment, which the Finance Admin Officer, Ibrahim S Kanu explained was a project undertaken to provide food items or cash to the potential beneficiaries since rice is the staple food which the beneficiaries will use their monies to buy, so they decided to start the project as a pilot phase.
