The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Haja Kalla Kamara has said that the operations to collect all taxes owed them will continue until the last penny has been collected.
Talking to Journalists on 1st December, after the operation, she said many institutions have been reminded several times of their obligation to pay all their taxes they owe the NRA, but they wait until the last minute when the NRA team arrives in their offices then they start begging and running to make payment. “During that period, the offices will be closed until the payment is verified before they are re-opened.
“I have told my staff not to listen to their pleas but to go ahead and seal an office until the payment is done and verified before they will re-open it. The government needs money and we have to meet our 2015 target as we have billions of Leones out there. We will not relent until we collect all the monies that these institutions owe us.”
She said they were about to shut down Sierra Leone Brewery Limited and Freetown Terminal Bollore, but both institutions paid the payment to avert the embarrassment. She said Bollore paid Le3.4 billion and Brewery paid all the money they owe.
Haja Kallah Kamara averred that there are other institutions testing their resolve. “They are taking chances and hoping we will not reach them; well, I want to tell them: we are coming and we will embarrass them by making sure the entire country knows that they are debtors.”
Overall, the Commissioner General said many businesses have complied as they don’t wait for NRA to visit them but they come and make all the payments and necessary arrangements with the office and she said where there is misunderstanding it is solved amicably with no problem from both sides. She said so far they have collected over Le25 billion.
