Sport: FIFA To Expand World Cup To 40 Teams

FIFA is looking to increase the number of teams at a World Cup finals from 32 to 40, the BBC reports.
Increasing the number of teams at a World Cup final is just one of a raft of reforms it hopes will help regard FIFA as “modern, trusted and professional” by December 2018. Other propositions are the an increase in the number of women involved in decision-making and term limits for senior officials, whose salaries will be made public.

209 FIFA member associations must make a decision on this proposals by February 2016. The proposal to increase the number of teams qualifying for the World Cup was however deferred pending a further study.
The following were the proposals made at the lastest FIFA executive meeting:
1. The executive committee will be replaced by a new council which will clearly separate political and management tasks.
2. Senior officials will now only be allowed to serve a maximum of 12 years.
3. There will be stringent integrity checks in place for individuals on standing committees
4. A minimum of six women – up from one at present – will be able to be elected to the Fifa council
5. The salaries of the Fifa president and senior officials will be made public.
