Sierra Leone News: 392 Health Practitioners sworn-in


The College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) has sworn in 392 medical practitioners at its annual congregational ceremony held at Kosso Town campus on Saturday 28th November 2015.
Among these numbers were 25 graduate of Bachelor of surgery, 15 Bachelor of Nursing, 14 Bachelor of Pharmacy, 122 Diplomas in Nursing, 10 Diploma in Laboratory Sciences, 21 Diploma in Pharmacy, 150 Certificates in Nursing, 24 Diplomas in Community Medicine, 12 Certificates in Ophthalmic Nursing and 9 Certificates in Mental Nursing.



Acting Provost of COMAHS, Dr. Mohamed Samai explained that COMAHS was established in 1988 to train and produce high quality students in medicine, pharmacy, nursing and laboratory technician, noting that when the college was established it only had 12 students on roll but now the college can boast of 1,500 students.
Highlighting the college’s achievements, Dr. Samai said the college has trained and produced lots of health practitioners, maintaining that his administration has improved the teaching environment by providing white board and air condition facilities in all classrooms.
He continued that law and order has been restored while faculty and staff capacity has been improved. The college has also commissioned infrastructural development currently taking place at the School of Nursing and also the renovation of student hostels.
Dr. Samai, while thanking the government for support in providing scholarships and fees subsides to students, noted that the granduants are the result of that support.
“Government needs to take the lead in providing human resource to the college to improve of the health sector as the ebola outbreak affected the medical profession with the loss of medical practitioners in the country. The current number of health practitioners does not cater adequately for Sierra Leone’s population,” Dr. Samai explained.


Guest Speaker of the ceremony, Dr. Anne Schuchat of Center for Disease Control congratulated the newly sworn-in health practitioners, noting they have undergone many difficulties which made some to doubt whether they will succeed. She also thanked all those who contributed in the Ebola fight and warned them to be protective in doing their jobs, noting the effect of the EVD on their academic life.
Dr. Schuchat charged them that progress is possible in their lives with the different degrees, diplomas and certificates they had acquired. “You are now in position to create a better health system for Sierra Leone,” 
She thanked COMAHS for the partnership with CDC in the testing of the trial vaccine through the strive project, stressing that the partnership should continue.

Conferring the degrees, diplomas and certificates, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Prof. Ekundayo j. D. Thompson noted that this is a transitory process from the campus to the profession as they have been given the authority to practice what they have learnt during their stay at COMAHS.
