As the exploits of the legendary Rashidi Yekini continue to shape the history of
Nigerian football, the Kwara State House of Assembly has moved to immortalize
the striking football sensation.
In a sitting on yesterday, Tuesday 10th May the House honoured the late goal king in light
of his invaluable contribution to sports development in the country and for
bringing the state to the global map, the Nation reports.
While
making the call under matters of urgent public importance, House leader Hassan
Oyeleke said the striker’s 37 goals for Nigeria in 58 appearances, in various
national and international soccer tournaments, is the hallmark of excellence,
and as such he should be given due honour and compensation.
All the
members of the House unanimously supported the motion, saying the late soccer
legend deserved to be immortalized.
Yekini,
a native of lra in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara, died in May 2012 at the
age of 48 after a protracted illness.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian football community has taken steps to
immortalize the great man as the League Management Company, LMC, last year
renamed the highest goalscorer award in the Nigerian Professional Football
League after the late Super Eagles number 9.
