One of Nollywood’s most adored actresses, Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, recently hooked fans up with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Artwright, to discuss issues affecting them with the British government and possible ways of helping Nigeria in sustainable development.
High Commissioner Paul Artwright stated that the UK has continued to encourage the Nigerian government as Nollywood is currently placing high value in diaspora.
In his words, “We encourage the government to promote Arts & Entertainment industries. Nollywood is one great example with high export value.”

FIFA Interim president, Issa Hayatou, has congratulated the Nigerian Professional Football League side, Enyimba for winning the 2014/2015 Glo Premier League title.

Amaechi orders probe of maritime academy over N18bn remittances


Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has ordered a probe into the financial activities of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom State and N18 billion remittances to the institution by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in the last five years. Amaechi gave the order following allegations of financial recklessness and large scale fraud leveled against the academy’s rector, Joshua Okpo.

Dangote Builds N7bn Diagnostic Centre In Kano


The Chief Executive officer, Dangote Foundation, Ms Halima Dangote, during a visit to the Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, disclosed that, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, through it’s Dangote Foundation is building a state-of-the-art operating theatre and diagnostic centre at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano. She disclosed that the project will be completed in the next two years.

Noting that the project is a N7bn project, she attributed the earlier delay to technical hitches and said the new contractor, Dantata and Sawoe, had returned to site.

Buhari, Zuma To Meet Over MTN’s N1.04trn Fine


President Muhammadu Buhari and his South African counterpart, President Jacob Zuma, are to meet in Johannesburg this week to discuss MTN’s $5.2billion fine among other issues, South Africa-based Sunday Times has reported.

Both leaders are expected to meet and discuss the fine along the sidelines of the Forum of China-Africa Co-operation, the newspaper reported yesterday. The event takes place on December 4-5 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM) has commenced a weeklong training programme on report writing skills and presentation techniques for 30 NRA staff.
A statement by the Director General of WAIFEM, Prof. Akpan H. Ekpo expressed gratitude to the Management of the NRA for the opportunity given to WAIFEM to facilitate what is described as an important capacity building programme.

Nigeria: Names of 9 Professors Shortlisted For LASU VC Contest


Nine professors have been shortlisted to jostle for the position of Vice Chancellor at the Lagos State University after several considerations of their qualifications and pre-requisites for absorption, a source said.

The Bank of Sierra Leone is implementing a US$5 million project to build a National Switch that will ensure swift transfer of cash electronically within financial institutions and their customers.
“It is getting late for Sierra Leone” said Central Bank Governor Momodu Kargbo, adding that “Sierra Leone is among the last few countries in the ECOWAS region that is yet to have this piece of payment system in the country’s financial architecture in place,”

Sources from the United Democratic Movement (UDM) have revealed that plans are underway to select former junta leader, Valentine E. M. Strasser, as Chairman and Leader of the Party.

Sierra Leone: President Koroma Lays Foundation Stone for New Police Academy

President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma on Tuesday November 24 laid the foundation stone for the new Police Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy at Makump, Bombali district.
"The Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy will be an integral component of our peacekeeping contingents, providing them with the right training and equipping them for tours of duty abroad," President Koroma said.
The president called on the State House Chief of Staff and the Minister of Finance and Economic Development to support the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to acquire Contingent Owned Equipment with immediate effect and to ensure that personnel are deployed at the first available opportunity.
He thanked the landowners for providing 200 acres of land for the construction of the academy and expressed satisfaction that even as the building works are ongoing, the people of the three villages, where the academy is being constructed, would be given employment on the project.

Nigeria: Abuja Administration To Close Down 556 Substandard Schools


The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have concluded plans to close a total of 556 substandard schools, including those that function from football viewing centres and one-bedroom apartments across the territory.

A source at the Department of Quality Assurance told Daily Trust yesterday that a total of 556 schools, mostly private, were running classes below approved standards, adding that the FCTA had approved the closure of the schools.

Roli Bode George, the wife of PDP Chieftain, Bode George has assumed office as the acting Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA. Her appointment comes after the former chairman of the anti-drug agency Ahmadu Giade retired from office on Wednesday November 25th after serving the agency for 10 years.

Nigeria : Only 48 Nigerians Were Deported From UK -Immigration


The Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS has countered reports claiming that over 500 Nigerians were deported from the United Kingdom. 
Spokesperson of the NIS, Mr. Ekpedeme King stated that the United Kingdom Government on Wednesday deported only 48 Nigerians over immigration related offences.

“Some of them have overstayed their visa,” King said.

Top immigration officials at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the 48 deportees had nothing to do with the 29,000 Nigerians that the UK was planning to deport back into the country.

Sierra Leone News: After 3 days of intensive tax collection …NRA Collects over Le5 billion

The National Revenue Authority (NRA) has collected over Le5 billion in Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax in three days when they started the operations on Friday last week.
The Corporate Affairs Manager, Mohamed Bangura said this is the time that NRA usually intensified their tax collection so as not to allow institutions to go into the New Year with debt.
He said they are also making sure that they collect all these monies as they have to meet their target at all cost.


Sierra Leone News: Access to water… Borehole for Parliament


Seconds after it was officially launched, Baba Drilling and Exploration Company has consented to drill a borehole within Parliament so that it would have access to water flowing  through pipes  as water is not regular within that vicinity.
It is the company’s maiden corporate social responsibility coming from a request made by the City Father, Mayor Bode Gibson, who served as Chairman of the launching.
He told the gathering that “our capital City of Freetown was built on the sea shore and it is immediately surrounded by high hills and mountains. This geographic location disadvantages residents while accessing safe drinking water.”

Nigeria News: Plane with 500 Nigerians deported from the UK arrives in Lagos


500 Nigerians have been deported from the United Kingdom and arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos this morning. Many of them were deported for illegal stay permits. When interviewed, one of them said he was arrested by British police and was not allowed to even take his belongings before being deported. UK government plans to deport 29,000 Nigerians.
