SIERRA LEONE: MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT RAISES CONCERN OVER ALLEGED WAEC EXAMS MALPRACTICE

The ruling All Peoples Congress Member of Parliament representing constituency 15 in the Kenema district, Hon. Leonard Fofanah, who doubles as Deputy Leader of the House, on 18th November, serious concern over what he described as an alleged examinations syndicate operating within the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
Speaking during a parliamentary debate, he alleged that some rouge individuals within WAEC recruit and employ teachers as script markers, who in turn clandestinely trace examiners and offer them bribe to give under-served marks to examination candidates.
“I am calling on the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MEST) to issue a stern warning that all script marking should be done through conference marking”, said Hon. Fofana, adding that any teacher caught in the malpractice should be sacked.

Allegations of examinations malpractices are rife against students in tertiary institution and WAEC candidates.  However, even though the allegations persist, not much has been done by both WAEC and education authorities to stem the tide and bring those involve to book.
Recently, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Ekundayo Thomson hinted that starting from the 2016 academic year entrance examinations would be conducted for all students seeking admission into the university, apparently alluding to the fact that a good many students apply with good WAEC grades but perform poorly in their respective courses.
