Sierra Leone News: Ebola outbreak in West Africa “is not completely over” – Navarro

The Special Envoy on Ebola, Dr David Navarro, said that while the Ebola outbreak in West Africa “is not completely over”, two of the worst affected countries  Liberia and Sierra Leone  are free of transmission of the virus, while Guinea has started “its own countdown to having an interval of 42 days after the last case.”
Nabarro said Sierra Leone “are now in a 90-day period of enhanced surveillance, which means high level of vigilance because they are actually determined not to have any recurrence.”

In Guinea, he said, the last confirmed infected person, a three-week-old girl called Nubia, “is in a treatment unit in Conakry and she tested negative for the second time on Monday.”
Nabarro said “we are hopeful that she will be the last case in Guinea.”
The Special Envoy noted that the region still faces challenges, including the situation of the more than 15,000 people who had Ebola and survived.
He said “there are risks they face, there are risks their families face, and there are risks that they might unwittingly pose to other people.”
Since the West Africa Ebola outbreak began in 2013, there have been 28,634 confirmed cases and 11,314 deaths.
