David Haye continued
his impressive comeback with a second victory in four months against the
hapless, but previously unbeaten, Arnold Gjergjaj in front of 15,000 fans at
London’s 02 Arena Saturday night.
The
two-weight world champion put his visitor down once in the first and twice in
the second before the referee intervened before the second round wound out.
Haye was clearly in a different
class from his opponent and was in no mood to mess about with American rival
Shannon Briggs, who earlier knocked out Emilio Ezequiel
Zarate, threatening to steal the show.
Haye
threw out two punishing jabs and landed with a big right hand, immediately
hurting his victim. He then felled Gjergjaj with another big right hand in a
one-sided opening round.
The two-division world champion dominated the
second round, too, flooring his opponent twice more, and after the referee gave
the Swiss-based Kosovan a standing count, the 35-year-old Brit landed a barrage
of punches to finally stop Gjergjaj just over halfway through that second
period.
He then called out 44-year-old
former champion Shannon Briggs who’s been stalking him.
“Anthony Joshua is
a fight I’d absolutely relish. I’m a fan but it’s a fight I want. Next up for
me is Shannon Briggs. How did he look?
“He came to England
and talked a big game. I told him I’d fight him so me and Briggs [are] on a
collision course for September. Let’s go, chump!”
