Sierra Leone Government Bans All School Sporting Activities In Freetown

Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has with immediate effect instituted a ban on all schools sporting activities across the Western Area of the country.

In a press release issued on Thursday 17th November 2016, the Ministry states that the move to ban all sporting activities in all schools is as a result of “violence activities perpetuated by pupils from various schools after the athletic sports meeting by the Methodist Girl’s high School at the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Wednesday 16th November, 2016 in the evening hours of the day.”
Meanwhile, eyewitness who spoke to Awareness Times Newspaper say “the students smashed windscreens of cars, and also vanderlised the streets of Freetown on their way from the sport meet.”As a result, several persons were reportedly wounded and a number of arrests were carried out  by the police.

It is against this backdrop that the Ministry clearly bans all school sporting activities. Therefore, the Ministry clearly states “the ban is an attempt by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to instill sanity during sporting activities across the country.”

In the meantime,” the Ministry admonished all Heads of Schools, teachers, and pupils to desist from attempting to organize any form of sporting activities in the Western Area.”
