Sierra Leone News:Eastern Polytechnic New Pres.calls for University Status

Students of the Eastern Polytechnic in Kenema have on Monday 02nd October 2015 elected a new president for the college for the 2015/2016 academic year.
The election which took place on the college campus along Combema Road in Kenema city was conducted by the National Election Commission (NEC) led by Francis Balema Musa in collaboration with the college electoral commissioner, Pious Kai Combay Brima.
Two candidates, Sento Conteh with the symbol Pen and Monya Bobor Sumaila with the symbol Book went in for the presidency position. At the end of the poll Monya Bobor Sumaila polled 928 valid votes while his opponent Sento Conteh polled 235 valid votes with 58 invalid votes and the total votes were 1221.
The electoral commissioner, Francis Balema Musa declared Monya Bobor Sumaila who got the highest valid votes as the winner for the Eastern Polytechnic Students Union presidency.
In his maiden speech, the president-elect thanked all and sundry for taking part in the exercise. He apologized on behalf of all that whosoever might have wrong unconsciously must be forgiven. He described the students as one body under one umbrella and therefore called on all to come together and work in the interest of the institution and the nation as a whole.
He called on his supporters who believed in him not to provoke any one, adding that he is a president for Eastern Polytechnic and not for a support group.
He said any problem in the institution is the problem for all, and that with cooperation and collaboration they will achieve their dream by seeing the college becoming a university soon. He used the occasion to call on the government led by His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma to metamorphose the Eastern Polytechnic into a University, maintaining that it will be another big feather on the cap of the President.
He called on all to come together and work in the interest of the college and the nation.
A first year student of the college, Hawa Momoh who spoke to Awoko said she believed in the president as some body that always listens to the cry of his people. She said the college will soon become a University under the name of His Excellency, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.
